“I’m not really sure what brand of protein powder/shake to buy. At the moment I’ve got IsoWhey Complete (which is intended for women, and I am a girl haha). But its also supposed to help me loose fat while maintaining muscle, which is what I want. Do you think I should stick with this brand or change? And if I stick with it, once I’ve lost the fat I want to, should I change brands?”
ALL protein powder can help you “lose fat while maintaining [& building] muscle”. There is no such thing as “men’s protein” and “women’s protein”. It’s a marketing ploy used by companies to lure in women who are afraid of getting “bulky” or “manly”. The truth is, whey protein is whey protein, casein protein is casein protein…. you get the idea. Just because they put pretty packaging on it and some frilly words and maybe some extra vitamins, does not mean it’s only for women.
The only way to get “bulky” is to eat more calories than your body needs to maintain itself. It does not matter where those calories come from… protein powder, fruit, cookies, soda, potatoes, WHATEVER. Whey protein (yes, even the “men’s kind” *gasp*) helps maintain LEAN muscle mass and can help LOSE BODY FAT. =)
Don’t pay extra for some silly “women’s protein”. You’re getting ripped off if it’s more expensive. Simply find a protein that is good quality and keep the rest of your diet CLEAN… Remember, supplements are not a magical powder, just because you’re exercising and taking them does not negate a poor diet. =)
